Discussion:
Admins of borked Usenet providers have vanished.

Yet another nntp service is borked with no word from its owner.

The Rocksolid Usenet / NNTP servers are no longer authenticating to
allow posts.

There is no word from the admin yet on what is going on. In fact the
admin has yet to acknowledge that he is still alive.

AIOE went down with no word from the admin for weeks.

Mixmin went down with no word from the admin for weeks.

Rocksolid went down with no word from the admin for weeks.

The admins of these three services have vanished without a trace or a
word about their vanishing services.

Hmmm....

Why would an administrator make no statement acknowledging the status of
a service that has gone down or is broken?

Surprised to see AIOE as MIA.

FWIW unofficial usenet rumor alleges aioe's in process of recovering
from a hardware breakdown.

handled by different software modules and requiring specific

some seem to go to /dev/null, but not all.

I've considered adding the ability for people with accounts to use my --

The server exists and it would be minimal additional effort to allow

If you can accept the additional hassle, it would undoubtedly be
an asset to Usenet. That potential hassle is surely the overriding
consideration. Myself, I would welcome another server.

The main thing stopping me thus far is I'm not willing to put in the
time and effort to make a form to streamline the process for people to
request accounts.

If people want to email me and ask for an account, I'll seriously
consider it and quite likely reply with details.

I will require:

- an account that is specific to and identifies the requesting
individual to their public persona. Recognized / well known nicknames
allowed.
- the individual is the only person that uses the account.

I need the ability to terminate someone if they abuse the free service.

If you are interested and okay with requirements, then send an email.

You have to move on, Snipe. There will never be another a.u.k.
That good time feeling can't be gotten back. No server is
going to amount to the same thing. I seem to remember
kensi having something to do with it. I guess she broke it.
Now there's none left for us.
I don't follow: what has this to with alt.usenet.kooks? That place
has been a smoking crater for years. It's only people like the idiot
Derbyshire who try to keep AUK going when everybody else has
abandoned it.

This is simply about Grant's kind offer potentially to allow access to
Usenet via his server; it isn't specific to any particular group at all.

I'm the admin of Rocksolid, etc. When you posted this I was in a medically induced coma following a major surgery that was preceded by another major surgery, followed by 8 months of chemotherapy. There were several months where I could do nothing to administrate anything. (There were weeks that I have no memory of at all).

I assume whatever the issue was with the servers resolved itself, as people have been using them since.

I'm good, thx :) Last test (biopsy) about 10 days ago said negative and I feel pretty good. It's a crazy way to retire early, lol. Note to everyone, you really don't want pancreatic cancer, find something better to have :)

I've thought for a while to post something in advance in case I disappear forever so people know to not expect any further administration and when I saw this post I figured, why not just reply here.

Anyway, if all continues as it's going, I may be around for a while longer just to create software bugs and the occasional false positive nocem :)

I'm the admin of Rocksolid, etc. When you posted this I was in a
medically induced coma following a major surgery that was preceded by
another major surgery, followed by 8 months of chemotherapy. There were
several months where I could do nothing to administrate anything. (There
were weeks that I have no memory of at all).
I'm sorry to hear, belatedly, that you were ill. I hope you make a full
recovery, soonest.

Thanks all. Glad to be part of Usenet again!

Yet another nntp service is borked with no word from its owner.
The Rocksolid Usenet / NNTP servers are no longer authenticating to
allow posts.
There is no word from the admin yet on what is going on. In fact the
admin has yet to acknowledge that he is still alive.
I know this is an old message to reply to, but I just saw it so why not.

I assume whatever the issue was with the servers resolved itself, as
people have been using them since.

Why would an administrator make no statement acknowledging the status of
a service that has gone down or is broken?
Death?
Yep. Tough to login to your computer to compose an announcement of your
death after getting squashed by a semi, drowned at sea by the Perfect
Storm, or zapped to a crispy walking dead by lightning.

Other causes can be disinterest, getting busy with real life, operator
disappeared (moved, kidnapped, disappeared behind the Great Firewall),
ran out of money for his altruistic ventures, served an NSL but decided
to quit rather than lie to users about logging, or a disability that
prevents doing much of anything.

The owner of Spamgourmet (Josh) had a debilitating disease that made it
harder and harder to work on his anonymizing e-mail service until he got
hospitalized during which his son tried to take over. The son (Josiah)
was woefully unprepared for the task, did an unnecessary update that
killed some features of the service, would announce only in the web
forums but never participated there to see problem reports, and the son
eventually gave up. It wasn't his hobby or personal project, anyway.
He did it to help Dad. Dad died.

Son gave up on Spamgourmet. Spamgourmet became a zombied service: works
a little bit, but too crippled and unreliable. I had to find something
else that was similar (an aliasing e-mail service, not just an e-mail
forwarding service), and found AnonAddy.

I remember using Albasani until that operator died. See:

Someone (don't remember who) picked up the tab (effort & money) for a
while to keep albasani.net alive, but it eventually died, too.

Did anyone figure out for sure why AIOE died back around February 2023?

Rumors of the death of the operator exist, although no "official"
confirmation.
Because no news from the operator occured, I think the death theory
might be realistic.

I spoke with Paolo Amoroso (aioe admin) at one time, concerned about the
disappearance of aioe. He was seriously ill. He never responded to my
followup email.

I also found this thread (sorry for linking to GG):

https://groups.google.com/g/eternal-september.support/c/ElendPvKyx4

Note that there's another Paolo Amoroso on the Usenet who has nothing to
do with aioe.

Someone (don't remember who)
Roman Racine.

The hard disk died, and Roman never got around to reinstall the machine,
AFAIK. (It's one thing to keep a piece of complex software you didn't
create running; it's another thing to set it up again from scratch.)
